Multnomah Village sits within the Southwest Portland coalition area, where about two streets in five are paved but lack curbs, compared to about one in six citywide. Sidewalk coverage across that same coalition area is the lowest in the city, close to a quarter. Those are district numbers, not a reading of your block, but plenty of streets out here run out into gravel or grass where a curb would be.
That changes the first question of a move. On a curbed block, the question is which parking space the truck takes. Here, the question is whether the pavement is wide enough and firm enough to support a loaded truck for a few hours, and how someone carrying a dresser gets from there to your door when there is no walkway.
Patrick Butterfield runs the estimates, walks the bigger jobs in person, and still works alongside the crew; his son Aiden is on the trucks. The yard is in Hillsboro, about 30 minutes out.

What a Street With No Curb Line Changes
A curb does two things on moving day. It tells a driver exactly where the roadway stops, and it gives the crew a hard, level strip to walk on with something heavy. Take both away and the same house takes a different plan.
The edge is a judgment call, not a painted line
Where the pavement ends, the width capable of carrying a loaded vehicle can vary from one address to the next. A wheel that drops off the asphalt onto soft ground is a problem that costs time and can damage a yard. Our driver reads the edge before the truck is committed, and if the firmest spot sits a few houses down, the crew walks farther, and the yard is left alone.
A February edge and an August edge
The same edge that holds a loaded truck in dry weather can go soft after a wet week, so a move booked for February and a move booked for August can want different spots on the same block. If your date falls in the wet months, say so when you book.
Two neighbors can be two different jobs
One house has a wide paved apron and a driveway that will take a loaded box truck. Four doors down, the pavement narrows, a drainage swale runs along the edge, and the nearest firm spot is across the street. An address alone does not tell you which of those two you have, and between them lies the difference between a tailgate at the door and a carry the length of two front yards.

Settling the Truck's Spot Before Moving Day
Picking the spot takes a few minutes and no tape measure, only a look from the end of your driveway.
Four things worth telling us
- Whether the pavement ends at a curb, at a gravel or grass shoulder, or at a ditch.
- Roughly how wide the paved surface is, and whether two cars pass each other comfortably.
- Whether your driveway is level with the street or drops away from it.
- Where the neighbors park, and whether that changes on weekday mornings.
The driveway is worth checking first
A driveway that a box truck can back into puts the tailgate close to the door and takes the roadway out of the plan. Not every driveway will take the weight or the turn. Stand at the apron and look for three things: a steep drop off the street, a soft or broken surface, and anything overhead low enough to catch a roofline.
Photos beat descriptions
Two photos from the middle of the street, one looking each way, tell us more about an edge than a paragraph can. Send them with your estimate request.

Multnomah Village Moving Rates
An hour range on a street like this depends on two things: where the truck can stand and how far a loaded dolly has to travel from there to your door.
Price a Multnomah Village moveStandard rate: Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–7 PM
- 2 movers + truck: $150.35 per hour · 3 movers + truck: $206.75 per hour · 4 movers + truck: $263.15 per hour
- 3-hour minimum · $56.40 per hour for each additional mover or packer
- Evenings after 7 PM Mon–Sat, and Sundays (3-hour minimum): $195.20 / $273.40 / $351.60 per hour
- Holiday rate (3-hour minimum): $230.50 / $325.50 / $420.50 per hour
The drive from our Hillsboro yard is part of the hours, billed at the same hourly rate as the crew.

If you want packing too
Packing bills separately, at the packer rate above, and boxes are priced per item: small $6.30, medium $7.45, large $9.45, wardrobe $31.55, and a TV box at $55.85 per use. Cartons you already have get used first.
Released Value, Replacement Cost and Claims
Released value at $0.60 per pound is the legal floor, not a plan. Cartons you packed yourself are harder to claim on, because nobody can show how the contents were padded. Replacement-cost protection is available if you choose to purchase it. We will submit a claim upon request. Payment is due upon completion, by card, check, or cash.

Moving a Load Where There Is No Sidewalk
When the walking and driving surfaces are the same asphalt, the carry has to be arranged in advance. A crew that would spread out on a sidewalk works differently on a shoulder.
One path, kept to
The crew can settle on one path between the tailgate and the door and keep to it. On a blind curve or a busier stretch, ask the crew to work the door side only. Pieces come off the truck as the person ahead of them clears the doorway, so nobody is standing out in the roadway holding a dresser and waiting for a turn.
What goes down on the ground
Before the first piece comes off, the crew reads the ground between the tailgate and the threshold and takes the driest line across it. Wet grit tracks indoors easily, so the runners start at the doorway and work inward.
The walk before the truck leaves
On a street like this, the last walk is worth taking outside as well as in: the edge where the truck stood, the grass beside it, and the line the crew used between tailgate and door.

Jobs the Carry Distance Changes
Tailgate-to-door distance decides which of these is a long day.
- Large home moving: a big house where the firm edge is two front yards from the door
- Senior moving and downsizing: a paced day, with the walk from the firm edge counted into the hours you agree to
- Furniture moving and disassembly: a headboard or sectional broken down at the tailgate, so nothing crosses the shoulder whole
- Packing and unpacking: cartons closed the night before, so nothing is taped while the truck stands on a soft edge
- Specialty and high-value pieces: a marble top or a mirror carried by hand over gravel
Which Stretches Were Rebuilt, and Which Were Not
The Capitol Highway rebuild of 2021 to 2023 ran south from the Village toward West Portland, between SW Garden Home Road and SW Taylors Ferry Road, and reopened to two-way traffic on July 5, 2023, with a continuous sidewalk. Capitol Highway between SW Multnomah and SW Texas was a separate and much smaller job, finished in June 2020. Both reached a short way onto the streets beside them, and neither set out to rebuild the residential blocks behind those routes. The edge outside your own door is a separate question, and it is the one we ask.
What the Multnomah Boulevard walkway is made of
Between SW 37th and SW 40th, PBOT restriped existing pavement to create an interim shoulder walkway and bikeway along the north side, finished in November 2024, with concrete curb and delineators in places along its outer edges. It is a walking surface, not a standing surface: a crew can walk a load along it, and a truck cannot stand on it.
A through route is rarely a standing spot
When PBOT scoped the rebuild, it projected the corridor would handle over 8,000 vehicles a day. A through route carrying that kind of volume is a poor place to leave a loaded truck standing for the length of a move, so an address on or near one gets its standing spot off the through lanes, on a quieter block face or on the property itself.

Multnomah Village Moving Questions
The only firm spot is in front of a neighbor's house. Do we have to ask them?
A neighbor's permission does not make an on-street spot legal or illegal, and the driver checks that the spot we take is legal. A knock the day before still helps, because someone who knows they will be boxed in for three hours can move their car the night before. A private apron or a shared driveway is a different matter, and that one does need to be asked about.
Can a truck get down a shared lane or a long private drive?
We run two trucks, and a lane like that is where the choice between them gets made. What we need to know is the width at its narrowest point, whether branches or a roofline overhang it, and whether there is room to turn at the far end or the truck would have to come back out the whole length in reverse.
The pavement in front of our house is gravel. Is that a problem?
It is a question, not a stopper. Tell us how far the gravel runs and whether a car parks on it through the winter without trouble. If it will not hold the weight, the standing spot moves to the nearest firm pavement, and we add the longer walk to the estimated hours.
Can we leave a car in the driveway on moving day?
Better to move it the night before. A driveway that is clear from the start is the simplest standing spot on a street with no curb, and shuffling cars once the crew is on the clock costs time you are paying for.
