Loading & Unloading Help in Hillsboro & Greater Portland: Your Truck, Our Pros
Family-Owned & Operated | ODOT #275978 · USDOT #3604556 | $150.35/hr for 2 Movers: Same Rates, Same Crews | Google 4.8★ Rated | Open 7 AM–10 PM, Every Day
Renting the truck was the easy 20% of your DIY move. The other 80%, getting a household into that box so it arrives the way it left, is a skill, and it's the exact skill our crews practice every working day. Butterfield Moving loads and unloads rental trucks, PODs, and containers, and DIY moves across Hillsboro, Beaverton, Portland, and Greater Portland: you bring the box, we bring the part that decides everything.
Here's a fact worth knowing about the labor you're comparing us against: most gig-marketplace 'moving helpers' aren't licensed carriers. We do labor-only work at the same published rates as a full-service move, with the same crews our reviews name.
Loading day, unloading day, or both ends of a move you're driving yourself, call Patrick or Amy and book the part that matters.
Same Crews, Same Standard
The movers loading your rental are our full-service crews, insured, trained, and reviewed by name. Not marketplace gig labor.
Same Published Rates
$150.35/hr for 2 movers, 3-hour minimum, labor-only priced like full-service, because the skill is the service.
PODs & Containers
Container loads ride a crane-truck later, we load them low, centered, and strapped for that ride, not just for your driveway.
Your Interstate DIY, Our Oregon End
Driving your own truck out of state? We load the Oregon end professionally, the part of your interstate move we can legally perfect.
Equipment Rides Along
Dollies, straps, and shrink wrap come with the crew; rental pads are yours or ours at published supply prices.
Patrick and Amy Answer Every Call
Patrick and Amy take the calls and book the moves, 7 AM–10 PM, every day, with Patrick handling the walk-throughs.
Three Decisions That Decide Whether DIY Saves You Money
Who loads the box decides what arrives
Transit damage is born at loading: unstrapped tiers, heavy-over-light stacking, voids that let the load breathe and shift. A professionally loaded truck carries noticeably more per foot and delivers what it carried, which means the few hundred dollars of load labor routinely pays for itself in the smaller truck, the single trip, and the dishes that arrive as dishes. DIY the driving; don't DIY the physics.
Decision 1
Marketplace gig labor, or a licensed crew
App-marketplace helpers are anonymous gig workers, no carrier license required, varying insurance, nobody's name on a truck. We book the same labor-only work direct: licensed crew, published rates, same standard as a full move.
Decision 2
Book both ends, or know exactly which end matters more
If your DIY move stays in Oregon, book the load and unload together, and both ends run on one plan. If you're driving out of state, we load the Oregon end, legally, that's where our work stops, and a tightly loaded truck is the best gift you can hand whoever opens the door in Boise or Austin. Loading is the end that decides the move; if you can only afford pros once, make it here.
Decision 3

How a Butterfield Load Day Runs
The call: box, contents, date
What you've rented (truck size or container), what's going in it, both addresses if we're doing both ends, and your timeline. Five minutes to a real plan and a number.
Schedule against your rental window
Rental trucks are billed by the day, and containers are billed by the week; we slot the crew so your equipment time is working time. Book the labor when you book the truck; month-end rentals and crews sell out together.
The crew arrives equipped
Dollies, straps, and shrink wrap ride with the crew. Rental pads are yours to rent or ours to sell at published prices; we'll tell you on the call which is cheaper for your load.
The load, engineered
Heavy base tiers against the cab wall, weight balanced, soft goods filling voids, straps at every tier, fragile boxes high and tight. Your truck gets the same load discipline our trucks get; it just has your name on the rental agreement.
Walkthrough before the door rolls down
You see the load before it closes: what's where, what's strapped, what to check at fuel stops. Payment at completion: card, check, or cash. No deposit ever held the date.
Unload day, if it's ours too
At the other end, same week or whenever your container lands, the crew unloads to rooms, rebuilds beds first, and places furniture where you point. The DIY move ends like a full-service one.
Labor Pricing: Same Rates as Full-Service, On Purpose
Loading help here costs exactly what our full-service crews cost, and the reason is the page's whole argument:
Standard Rate
Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–7 PM
2 movers + truck: $150.35 per hour
3 movers + truck: $206.75 per hour
4 movers + truck: $263.15 per hour
Each additional mover: $56.40 per hour
Overtime Rate
after 7 PM Monday–Saturday, and Sundays
2 movers: $195.20 per hour
3 movers, $273.40 per hour
4 movers, $351.60 per hour
Holiday rate (3-hour minimum): 2 movers $230.50 per hour · 3 movers $325.50 · 4 movers $420.50
labor
Why labor-only isn't discounted
Because nothing about the work got cheaper: same trained crew, same equipment, same insurance, same wear on the same backs. The truck was always the smallest line of a moving bill. When you supply it, you save its cost, not the crew's. Companies that price labor-only cheaply are telling you which crew they send to it.
budget
What your load budget looks like
Most apartment loads run at or near the 3-hour minimum
Family-home loads scale with rooms and packing readiness
Supplies if needed: shrink wrap and boxes at published prices · packing help $56.40/hr per packer
No deposits · payment at completion · free rescheduling with notice when the rental company changes your plans
Our Reviews
Loading Is Where Our Reviews Were Earned
Every five-star review on our full-service moves is secretly a loading review; the speed, the nothing-broken, and the by-lunch finishes all happen because the load was right. Three windows into the same skill you're hiring here:
-
A customer watched a father-son crew load a full furniture move in roughly half an hour, 'Super quick, professional, and communicative!' Pace like that isn't rushing; it's a load plan executed by people who've run it a thousand times. On your rental truck, that pace is rental-day money back in your pocket. (Trevell W., Google review, quoted on our commercial page too; one record, honestly shared.)
-
A typical container day: the POD sits in a Beaverton driveway, household staged in the garage. The crew builds the load low and centered, heavy base tiers, soft-good voids, straps at the container's points, because this box will ride a crane-truck and a freeway, not just sit pretty. The door closes on a load that can't shift; the container company picks it up on Thursday; everything arrives in the order it left. Two hours and change at the published rate.
-
A family driving themselves to another state books our crew for the Oregon morning: full house into their 26-foot rental, tiered and strapped, walkthrough before the door rolls down, fuel-stop checklist in hand. We can't follow them across the border. Oregon-only is the license and the promise, but the load crossed three states without a shift. The end we could touch, we perfected.

DIY Moving in Greater Portland Has Local Math
The Westside DIY economy
Washington County moves on rental trucks and containers, practical households doing the driving and renting the box. Load labor is where that thrift gets protected or squandered: the same family that saved $800 renting can lose it to one shifted load. We're the licensed half of the hybrid move and are proud of the niche.
Month-end: trucks and crews sell out together
The same month-end crunch that books our full-service calendar empties the rental lots. Reserve the truck and the load crew in the same hour; a truck with no crew and a crew with no truck are the two saddest bookings in moving.
Container windows and driveway diplomacy
PODs sit for days, and Westside HOAs and narrow streets have opinions about that. We'll coach the placement when you order the container, door facing the house, room for the crew, no blocked sidewalks, so load day starts loading instead of negotiating.
Why can't you find us on the moving-help apps
Search the gig marketplaces for Hillsboro loading help, and we won't appear; we book direct, under our own name, ODOT number, and published rates instead. The marketplace model runs on labor that ISN'T a moving company. Read that twice before handing strangers your grandmother's hutch, then call a carrier directly. Any carrier. Ideally, this one.
Rain on your rental
Rental trucks don't come with our weather habits, but your load day gets them anyway: covered staging, runners inside your home, furniture wrapped before it crosses the gap, boxes never set on wet pavement. October through May, the crew manages the sky like it's part of the inventory.
Apartment loads still need the paperwork
Loading your rental at an apartment building doesn't skip the building's rules: elevators are still reserved, and some managers want a COI even for labor-only crews. Ours usually lands within an hour; mention your building on the call.
The interstate-adjacent niche
Plenty of Greater Portland's DIY moves end in Boise, Phoenix, or Texas. The Oregon end is ours to perfect: a professional load-out that survives the miles, plus the honest line at the border. We'd rather own one end excellently than pretend at both.
What Professional Loading Actually Involves
The tier system, taught in one paragraph
A load is built in vertical slices: heavy, square bases (dressers, washers) tight to the front wall; medium weight stacked to the ceiling on top; soft goods crushed into every void so the tier is solid wall-to-wall; a strap across its face; repeat. A truck loaded in tiers is a truck where nothing can start moving, and 'nothing starts moving' is the entire science of arrival.
The liability line, drawn honestly
Labor-only splits responsibility, and we'll say it plainly: our workmanship is ours, how it's wrapped, stacked, and strapped, and the road is yours, because you're the carrier of your own DIY move. That's exactly why the load quality matters so much, and why we treat your rental like the load plan is signing our name. It is.
Heavy pieces on labor days
Safes, pianos, and gym racks can join a load day, quoted per piece on the same call, with the same honest limits their own pages spell out. The one rule that never bends: the equipment does the lifting, even when the truck is yours.
Unload-end standards
An unload isn't dumping boxes inside the door. Rooms get called, beds get rebuilt first, furniture lands where you point and moves until you're happy, the full-service finish standard, applied to a truck you drove. The last hour of a DIY move is where it stops feeling DIY.
Container physics: loading for the crane
A POD doesn't just drive, it gets lifted, tilted, and trucked. Container loads go low and centered, weight spread across the floor rather than piled at one end, straps at the container's anchor points, nothing tall and proud waiting to topple at the lift. Loading a container like a truck is the most common DIY container mistake; we load it for its actual journey.
What we bring, what you rent
With the crew: dollies, straps, shrink wrap, and door-jamb protection. From your rental counter: the pads, ideally two dozen for a family home (or buy ours at published supply prices). The call sorts the checklist so load day has zero hardware-store detours.
Rental trucks aren't our trucks: we load accordingly
Rentals bring quirks: rub rails that may or may not hold a strap, ramps steeper than liftgates, attic spaces over the cab that beg to be misused. The crew reads your specific box and adapts. Heavy stays off the attic, straps find real anchor points, and the ramp gets traction respect in the rain.
Load-Labor Questions, Answered Straight
-
The same published rates as everything we do: $150.35 per hour for two movers, 3-hour minimum. Same crews, same skill, same insurance, supplying your own truck saves you the truck, not the craft.
-
Because we're not the app guys. Licensed carrier, insured company, named crew, published rates. The marketplace discount buys you anonymous labor and a shrug if something breaks; that's the actual product difference, priced honestly.
-
Not on labor-only jobs, your rental or container is the whole point. If you'd rather skip the rental counter entirely, that's our full-service moving, one page over.
-
Yes, and we load it for the crane-truck ride ahead, not just the driveway: low, centered, strapped at the anchor points. Container loads are some of our most common labor work.
-
We'll load the Oregon end professionally; that's legal, honest, and the end that decides whether your load survives the miles. Across the border, the driving and unloading are yours (or a crew you book there).
-
Dollies, straps, and shrink wrap ride with the crew. Furniture pads come from your rental counter or from us at published prices; the call tells you which is cheaper for your load.
-
Honestly split: our handling is on us; if our crew damages something in the wrapping, carrying, or loading, we will submit a claim upon request. The transit in your truck is yours, which is why the load quality we deliver before you drive is the whole service.
-
Apartment loads often land at or near the 3-hour minimum; family homes scale with rooms and how packed you are when we arrive. Packed and staged beats packing-while-loading by hours, literally.
-
If both ends are in Oregon, yes, booked in one call, planned as one job. Container moves book the unload when your container lands.
-
Sometimes, elevator reservations always help, and some managers want a COI even without our truck involved. Ours usually arrives within an hour; mention the building when you call.
Rent the Truck. Hire the Skill.
One call books the crew that makes your DIY move arrive like a professional one, on load day, unload day, or both. Published rates, licensed company, and a load plan with your name on the rental and ours on the workmanship.
