In Scappoose, a moving truck may stop in a moorage lot above a floating home, at a gate beside the airport, or at the end of a gravel farm lane. Each of those starts a different plan. The town takes its name from Skáppus, a Chinookan village on the Multnomah Channel, and is located in Columbia County, about 20 miles northwest of Portland.
Butterfield Moving is a family company running trucks out of Hillsboro. Patrick Butterfield owns the business and prices the moves, and Aiden, his son, lifts alongside the crew. We are licensed in Oregon as a for-hire carrier and hold USDOT #3604556. A Scappoose move is priced by the hour from the card further down this page.
Our trucks reach Scappoose in about 30 to 35 minutes. The rest of the plan comes from your addresses: how near the truck can stop to your door, which pieces have to come apart, and whether anything is headed to a second stop.

The Short List for Scappoose Callers

Gravel lanes behind the channel levees, with a truck turnaround picked ahead.
Dutch Canyon Move-Ins

Homes and shops on the highway, with the truck waiting off the travel lanes.
Carry Paths Timed

Dock, Hangar or Farm Lane: Where Your Scappoose Move Begins
Setting 1: A floating home on the water
Floating homes are moored along the Multnomah Channel and around Scappoose Bay, and a moving truck cannot pull up to a front door that floats, so the plan centers on the walk between the parking area and the home: how long the dock runs, how the ramp or gangway meets it, whether a gate needs a code, and whether the moorage keeps a cart. At the walk-through, Patrick can walk that path with you and time it. Wide pieces may need to come apart to clear a narrow float, and we can carry smaller, lighter loads so fewer people are on the ramp at once. The hours on the estimate reflect that carry. If the ramp or dock is too steep or narrow to carry a piece safely, Patrick will say so at the walk-through.
Setting 2: A hangar, shop or suite at the airpark
The Scappoose Industrial Airpark covers more than 196 acres at the northeast edge of town, with over 100 private hangars and companies that build aviation seating, gyroplanes and composite aircraft parts. When a business or tenant moves, the planning questions concern access: which entrance the truck uses, who can open it, and what time the gate opens. We move desks, shelving, workbenches, tool chests and boxed files. Aircraft, engines, and production machinery belong with a specialist rigger, and we will tell you that on the phone.
Setting 3: A house on farm ground or acreage
Dairy farming and logging built early Scappoose. East of town, 11 miles of levees along the Multnomah Channel protect about 5,700 acres of low land that holds farms, homes, businesses and industry. A move from this kind of property seldom ends at the back door of the house. A shop, a barn, or an equipment shed can hold as much as the living room, and a gravel lane can determine where a truck can turn around. Describe the outbuildings and the driveway when we talk. After a wet stretch, we can park the truck on firm ground and walk a little farther instead of testing a soft shoulder.

The Scappoose Details We Check Before a Moving Date
A bridge replacement on Cornelius Pass Road
Washington County is replacing the 1946 bridge over Rock Creek on Cornelius Pass Road, which was not designed for modern freight trucks. The new two-lane span has wide shoulders for heavy trucks. During closures, trucks use U.S. 26, I-405 and Highway 30, and that longer drive runs on the same clock as the carrying.
Overnight work where the pass meets Highway 30
ODOT is upgrading lighting, signals, signs, and traffic cameras on Cornelius Pass between U.S. 26 and Highway 30, with completion expected in November 2026. Lane closures for that project are scheduled from 9 PM to 5 AM, so a daytime move should see little of it. If a move runs late, we can check TripCheck before the truck heads home.
Highway 30 through town
Highway 30 carries traffic straight through Scappoose, past the Peace Candle of the World, a 50-foot silo that was covered in wax in 1971. If your home or shop fronts the highway, Patrick can point out at the walk-through where the truck will wait off the travel lanes, whether that is a cross street, a driveway or a nearby lot.
A new park on E.J. Smith Road
A $1 million state parks grant is paying for a public park with sports fields and walking paths on the Grabhorn property, with construction expected to start later in 2026. Homes near the site may see construction traffic during construction, and we can ask about closures when we set a start time.
Sidewalk construction on SE Vine Street
Sidewalk improvements on SE Vine Street are planned for summer 2027, meant to make the walk to two elementary schools safer. A move on that street next summer may need a different loading spot, which is simple to settle once the work zone is marked.

If Your Scappoose Move Looked Like This
A house in town to a newer home in Dutch Canyon
With both addresses in Scappoose, the drive between them is short. At the walk-through, Patrick would list the largest pieces and check them against the stairs and doorways at the new house, and the estimate would show the crew size and the hours it expects.
A Scappoose farmhouse to a smaller home in St. Helens
The house would be only part of the load. We would walk the outbuildings first, because a shop full of tools can take as long to load as the house. Anything bound for the new garage would go on the truck as its own group, so it comes off together. If the smaller home cannot take every piece, deciding what stays before moving day keeps the hours down.
A small office near City Hall moving on a Saturday
A Saturday keeps weekday business running and bills at the standard daytime rate. We would carry the computers, while whoever handles your IT unplugs them and sets them back up. If the new landlord wants a certificate of insurance first, ask for it early in the week.

Four Stages of a Butterfield Scappoose Move
Both ends described, and a free look at bigger jobs
Patrick asks about each address, the biggest pieces and anything stored outside the house, and a smaller move can often be priced during that same conversation. For a larger home, he drives up at no charge, measures the tight spots and writes down how many movers, how many hours and how long the drive runs.
Packing, if you want help
Book packers for the whole house, only the kitchen and breakables, or not at all. Cartons we bring and leave unopened stay off your bill, and boxes you already own are welcome.
Floors covered, furniture padded and set where you point
Before anything is lifted, the walking route gets floor runners, and each door frame on it gets a jamb guard. Furniture is padded and strapped in the truck. At the new address, each piece goes to the room you name, and anything we took apart gets put back together.
Walk it, then pay
You and the crew look through the rooms together before the truck leaves. Payment comes at the end, with no upfront deposit.
The Craft Side of a Scappoose Move
Tool chests, workbenches and garage shelving
A rolling tool chest can travel with its drawers emptied or secured, depending on the weight. Heavy workbenches can come apart where their bolts allow. Metal shelving is broken down, with uprights and shelves bundled together. When we do the breakdown, we photograph each piece first and bag and label its hardware, which speeds up the process of putting the garage back together.
Mirrors, glass tabletops and framed art
Glass rides on edge, padded on both faces, and we can wrap a framed piece so its corners take no pressure. Mention any mirror or tabletop over about five feet, so the crew brings enough pads and plans space for it against the truck wall.
New furniture, assembled on moving day
Ordered flat-pack furniture for the new house? The crew can build it as part of the hourly job. When the truck and the tools are already there, it can spare you a night with an instruction sheet.
Moves that go past the hourly card
A longer move from Scappoose to another Oregon city is priced on a written quote based on mileage and weight. We handle moves inside Oregon only.
Released Value, Replacement Cost and Claims
Released value at $0.60 per pound is the legal floor, not a plan. Cartons you packed yourself are harder to claim on, because nobody can show how the contents were padded. Replacement-cost protection is available if you choose to purchase it. We will submit a claim upon request.

Scappoose Moving Questions, Answered
What does a Scappoose move cost?
Two movers and the truck bill $150.35 an hour, three movers bill $206.75, and there is a 3-hour minimum. Your total rides on the size of the household and how the carrying goes at each address.
Scappoose is in Columbia County. Do you still work there?
Yes. The county line makes no difference to us, and the rates on this page apply in Scappoose just as they do across the rest of our local work.
How much notice do you need?
One to two weeks of notice covers most local moves. A large house or a summer date needs more lead time.
Can a crew come today?
Sometimes. About three times out of four we can, as long as you call before noon.
Do you offer storage?
No. We do not offer storage. If there is a gap between your move-out and move-in, a storage business can hold your things, and its address becomes one of the stops on your moving day.
Can we add a fifth mover to shorten a long day?
Yes. Each additional mover adds $56.40 an hour, and Patrick can show both crew sizes on the estimate.
Our new suite near the airport is outside the fence. Does that change anything?
It can. Light industrial space next to Scappoose Airport is leased both inside and outside the airport fence. Tell us which side your suite is on, so we know whether the start time depends on someone opening a gate.
Can the barn, the shop and the house all go together?
That is how we plan it. If the barn, the shop and the house all fit into one day, even with more than one drop-off address, a single minimum covers the lot. Tell us what is in each building on the call. If it looks like more than one day can hold, Patrick adds movers rather than adding days.
Our sale closing might shift. What happens to the date we booked?
Let us know one to two weeks ahead, and we move the booking to your new date at no charge.
