The City of Beaverton writes the service rules its garbage haulers work to, and two measurements buried in those rules decide what leaves your house and by which route. Anything that "cannot be disposed of in a standard 35-gallon Roll Cart or is longer than 36 inches in any one direction" is a separate collection, and the same rule gives it a deadline: "Collection shall occur within seven calendar days of a Customer's request." That is a full week, and it starts the moment you ask, so a Beaverton pack plan begins with the sort.
Our packers bill by the hour, either on their own schedule or alongside the load. The carton that saves you the most is the one you decided a week earlier never to fill.

The Cart Test and the 36-Inch Test
Where the two numbers come from
Beaverton's Solid Waste and Recycling Program sets the standards that its franchised haulers must meet. The rules are made under Beaverton Code 4.08.205, and the current set took effect in March 2024. The rule headed Other Collection Activities is the one quoted at the top of this page, and it ends on a sentence the top left out: "Medical waste and hazardous waste are exempt from this rule." Bulky Waste is defined separately, back in the definitions section, and of the examples listed there, the two that matter in a house being packed are appliances and furniture.
Walking the garage with a tape measure
Walk the garage, the shed, and the spare room with those two numbers in your head. The 35-gallon roll cart is the yardstick the rule measures by, whether or not a cart that size is standing at your curb: would the thing fit inside one? Is any one direction longer than 36 inches? Fail either test, and it is a separate collection, with its own request and its own week. Pass both, and it goes out with your ordinary service. The exemption at the end of the rule limits what the rule itself reaches, not what your ordinary service takes: medical waste and hazardous waste are exempt from the oversize collection, so a franchisee is not obliged to collect those two materials under it whatever size they are. Each answer tells you how many days ahead of the pack day that item has to be dealt with.
The request starts the clock, and the clock is what to plan from
Seven calendar days run from the request, which makes the phone call the action and puts it a week ahead of the packers. There is one oversize path, and that is it: you ask, and the collection falls inside the week. Will-Call Collection, as set out separately in the rules, is a residential service type and not a second route for an oversize item. One shorter clock sits elsewhere in the rules: the Additional Recycling Collection Service wants its request "at least two (2) business days before the next regularly scheduled collection day."
Chemicals, solvents and the propane bottle
Medical waste and hazardous waste are written out of that collection rule. In practice, that is the half can of deck stain, the solvent, the pool chemicals, and the propane bottle for the grill, and each one has a different destination and a separate errand. Our packers do not box them either, so a shelf of chemicals still undecided on pack day is a shelf that is still there on load day, and then still there at the walk-through.
A Beaverton Pack Runs on Three Dates, in This Order
Date one: the sort, and the call that starts the week
The sort is one evening with a tape measure and a list. Everything that fails the cart test or the 36-inch test goes on a sheet, the hauler gets called, and the collection gets booked. That single evening removes the largest source of surprise from a pack day, because what is left in the house is now the thing that is actually moving. Tell us on the estimate call what is going and what is leaving by another route, and the box count and the crew size both come down with it.
Date two: the pack day, at packer rates
Butterfield Moving is a licensed family company based in Hillsboro, and our own rate card is where the sequencing pays. A pack day before the move bills at packer rates, below moving-crew rates, because no truck and no moving crew are standing on the clock while cardboard gets filled. Packers box what is in front of them, and they are the wrong people to ask what stays. Handing a packer an undecided garage turns an hour of sorting into an hour of packing, and then into a carry, and then into an unpack.
Date three: the load, with nothing left to decide
By the time the truck arrives, every carton is closed and labeled and the sorted pile has already gone. A load day with decisions left in it runs long, and the hours are billed the same whether the crew is carrying or waiting.
The measurement that comes back at the new house
The sofa that cleared the old living room and will not clear the new one becomes bulky waste at the new address, on the same seven-day clock, and the request cannot go in until somebody has measured. Measure the rooms you are moving into before pack day rather than after it, and a piece that fails gets sorted on date one where it belongs. If the new address is also in Beaverton, the rules above apply. If it is not, the far end runs on its own city's list, and that list is worth reading before the truck is loaded.

Beaverton Packing Questions
Will you haul away the furniture we are not keeping?
No. We are a licensed household mover, and hauling waste is a different business with a different license. Beaverton routes it through the hauler franchised for your address, on the seven-day clock in the city rules, and that is the route we plan the pack day around.
How far ahead does the sort have to happen?
A week ahead of the packers at minimum, because the seven calendar days run from your request and not from your moving date. Two weeks is the safer figure if the request lands beside a holiday or your street's collection day falls early in that week.
We do not know which hauler serves our address.
Five franchised haulers cover Beaverton, each assigned a geographic area of the city, and Beaverton publishes a lookup that matches an address to its hauler. Your address determines your hauler and collection day, and the hauler is the one the seven-day request goes to.
Can your packers just box the garage and we deal with it at the other end?
They can. It is worth knowing what that costs: something you have already decided against gets paid for three times, once to pack it, once to carry it, and once to unpack it. Thirty minutes with a tape measure beforehand is worth more than any of the three.
We are moving out of Beaverton. Do the city's collection rules still matter?
The rules follow the address you are leaving, so the sort runs on Beaverton's numbers whether the truck is going across town or across the state. Only the far end changes, and it becomes whatever that city publishes.
What Our Customers Say
The Clock Starts When You Call the Hauler
Seven calendar days is the city's clock, and it does not start counting until someone picks up the hauler's phone. That call comes before ours. Once the collection is booked, (503) 506-4149 is where the packing date gets set, far enough past it that the house is down to what is actually moving.
