A move in St. Helens can begin at the north end of the Strand, on a Houlton side street or off Gable Road, and each of those starting points shapes a different plan for the day. Several streets in town have been rebuilt, and more work is planned, so we look at what has changed near your address before we settle on a crew and a start time.
Butterfield Moving is owned by the Butterfield family and runs its trucks out of Hillsboro. Patrick Butterfield runs the business and writes each estimate, and his son Aiden lifts furniture on our trucks. St. Helens sits about 40 to 45 minutes from our yard, which means the soonest we can put a crew there is the next day.
Send us both addresses, a rough count of rooms, and the pieces you worry about most. From that, Patrick can give you a crew size, an hour range, and the drive time before you commit to anything.

What a St. Helens Job Gets From Our Crew
Houlton Side Streets
Homes in West St. Helens, once the separate town of Houlton, have the distance from the door to the truck measured before moving day.
Olde Towne Storefronts
Display cases, counters and shelf stock wrapped and moved for small downtown shops.
Stairwell Carries
Apartment stairwells get pads on the rails and landings before furniture heads up or down.
Written Quotes for Longer Trips
A move from St. Helens to a distant Oregon city is priced ahead by mileage and weight.
Three St. Helens Streets That Changed, or Are Changing
Street 1: The redesigned north end of Strand Street
The north end of Strand Street was redesigned as a one-way road, with walkways that connect to Plaza Square. A truck on that stretch can only travel in one direction, so the side of the street it loads from, and the side your door is on, are settled before moving day. If the door and the truck end up on opposite sides, we can plan the crossing and show it in the hour range. Tell us the building and unit number, and Patrick can work out the approach on the map and confirm it during the walk-through.
Street 2: South First Street, extended to Tualatin Street
South First Street now runs to a new intersection with Tualatin Street, laid out for an eventual new city block. The same project upgraded water, sewer, and stormwater lines and moved overhead power lines underground. For a home or business along the extension, the block may look nothing like an older online map, so we can check the current layout before we plan the carry. Fewer overhead lines along that stretch also leave one less thing to watch when the truck backs in or the ramp comes down.
Street 3: Highway 30 and the sewer rebuild beside it
Highway 30 and a railroad freight line both cut through St. Helens about a mile and a half back from the river. The city plans to replace and upsize sewer lines in its Basins 4 and 6, and that work includes new pipe in the Highway 30 right-of-way and a bored crossing under the railroad, with trenches backfilled and repaved afterward. The city has taken bids for the work, and the project is moving toward construction. If a work zone appears near either of your addresses, tell us when you confirm the date, and we can load from a driveway or the next street over.

Around Town: St. Helens Factors Behind the Schedule
October weekends in Olde Towne
The Riverfront District was the backdrop for the 1998 Disney Channel movie Halloweentown, and the Spirit of Halloweentown festival fills Olde Towne on weekends through October. Downtown parking gets scarce on festival weekends, street closures remove many spots, and visitor parking moves to the lot at 451 Plymouth Street, beside the Nob Hill Nature Park trailhead. For an Olde Towne address that month, a weekday move sidesteps the festival weekends.
Gable Road, the community center and McCormick Park
The St. Helens Community Center is at 2625 Gable Road, and McCormick Park is reached from Gable Road via South 18th Street. For a house near either one, check the center's program calendar or the park schedule for your date, and we can set the start time around anything that draws a crowd.
The oak bluff at Nob Hill Nature Park
Nob Hill Nature Park is a 6-acre oak woodland on a basalt bluff overlooking the Columbia. If people use the sidewalk near your door, we can run the dollies along one side and keep the other side clear for them to pass.
School campuses as landmarks
The St. Helens School District operates McBride and Lewis and Clark elementary schools, St. Helens Middle School (rebuilt in 2019), and St. Helens High School. Columbia City Elementary reopened in 2017. When you call, naming the campus closest to each address lets Patrick place both homes quickly and estimate the drive across town before the walk-through.
Columbia City next door
Columbia City is its own town, incorporated in 1926, and it functions as a suburb of St. Helens. A move between the two stays on the hourly card, and because the drive between them is brief, it adds little to the bill.

How a Few St. Helens Jobs Would Run
None of these are past jobs. They show how Patrick would set up each one.
A Houlton house to an Olde Towne apartment on the Strand
The truck would be loaded in Houlton with the entry pieces going on last, putting them nearest the doors, and Patrick would plan the approach to the one-way north end. The crew would bring extra runners for a lobby or stairwell.
A Tigard townhome to a house near McCormick Park
The crew would load in Tigard in the morning, then drive north with the full truck, and both legs run on the same clock as the carrying. Mattresses and bed frames would be the last items loaded in Tigard, which puts them within reach as soon as the doors open at South 18th Street.
A stockroom and office moving into the Industrial Business Park
Shelving would be broken down and bundled, inventory boxed and labeled by shelf, and desks loaded at the tail of the truck for an early unload. Scheduling the work for an evening or a Sunday keeps the business open during the day, and that time bills at our evening and Sunday rates.

Hands-On Methods for St. Helens Homes and Shops
An Olde Towne storefront, carried out the front door
A small shop moves differently from a house. Display cases get emptied and wrapped with their glass shelves packed apart, counters come off their bases where the bolts allow, and stock goes into cartons marked by shelf so it can go back in the same order. Runners protect the shop floor and the front-door threshold.
Staging a listing, then clearing it
For a St. Helens house going on the market, we can pick up staging furniture, deliver it and place it to the stager's plan, and pull everything back out once the sale closes. We do the moving; the design choices stay with you or your stager.
Apartment stairwells off Matzen Street
St. Helens Place, one of the apartment communities in town, sits at 700 Matzen Street. For a unit up a flight or two in a building like that, the crew can pad the stair rails and landings, carry mattresses in bags, and stand tall pieces on end for the turn at each landing. Boxes for the upper floor can ride together near the truck door, so each trip up the stairs carries a full load.
Pieces that must come apart
Before a crib, a platform bed, or a corner desk is unbolted, the crew takes a photo of how it fits together. Screws and brackets go into a bag marked with the piece, which rides with its frame, and the piece is rebuilt once it reaches the right bedroom or office. If a doorway is still an inch too narrow, an interior door can be lifted off its hinges and rehung afterward.
Released Value, Replacement Cost and Claims
Released value at $0.60 per pound is the legal floor, not a plan. A 5-pound camera is valued at $3. Replacement-cost protection is available if you choose to purchase it. We will submit a claim upon request.

Six Steps in a Butterfield St. Helens Move
The addresses and the roads to them
Patrick writes down both addresses, the streets that lead to each, and the heaviest furniture, along with your preferred day. A smaller job can get its price during that conversation.
A walk-through for the bigger homes
On a larger house or an acreage property, Patrick visits at no charge, picks the truck position, measures the narrow points and lists the crew, the hours and the drive.
Packing ahead, if you book it
Packers can come the day before to box a single room or the entire house. Boxes of yours are welcome, and cartons we bring but never open are left off the bill.
Runners and jamb guards first
Runners cover the floors the crew will walk, and each door frame on that path gets a jamb guard, while the furniture still stands where it was.
Wrapped, strapped and driven
Blankets and tie-down straps hold the furniture steady on the highway. At the other end, the crew rebuilds the beds first and sets each piece where you ask.
A final look, then the bill
Before the truck pulls away, tour the rooms with the crew and flag any piece that should be shifted or given a second look. The bill is settled after the last piece is placed, and nothing is collected in advance.

St. Helens Moving Questions
What will a St. Helens move cost?
Two movers with the truck run $150.35 an hour, three run $206.75, and four run $263.15, with a 3-hour minimum. The size of your household and the length of the carry at each end decide the total.
How far ahead should we reserve?
One to two weeks of notice covers most local moves. Reserve earlier than that for a big house or a June, July, or August move.
Is St. Helens outside the Portland metro? Does that cost extra?
St. Helens is in Columbia County, and there is no out-of-area fee. You pay the hourly card, and the drive from our yard is included in those hours at the same rate.
Can we still move in or out of Olde Towne on an October weekend?
Yes. A Saturday bills on the standard column, and a Sunday on the evening and Sunday column. Give us the address early, since festival crowds and closed streets can stretch the carry and add time to the day.
Can you keep our furniture until the new place is ready?
No. We do not offer storage. When the gap is a matter of days, try lining up the dates instead: we can book a tentative day and shift it for free if you give us one to two weeks. For a longer gap, a storage company can hold your things.
Do moving blankets, stretch wrap, or taking the beds apart cost extra?
No. Wrapping, padding, disassembly, and reassembly are all part of the hourly rate, so they show up as crew time on the bill rather than as separate line items.
Will your crew unplug the computers when our office moves to the Industrial Business Park?
Your IT person handles the disconnecting at the old office and the reconnecting at the new one. Our crew wraps and moves the computers, monitors, and printers in between.
