Newberg sits on the far side of the Chehalem Mountains from our trucks. The Newberg-Dundee Bypass runs along the south side of town toward Dundee, and downtown carries 99W on a pair of one-way streets. Those three pieces of road determine where a moving truck enters town, how it reaches your curb, and where it stands while the crew loads.
We are Butterfield Moving, a family outfit whose trucks are based in Hillsboro. Getting a crew to Newberg takes about 40 to 45 minutes, and you will hear that on the first call. Patrick, the owner, handles the estimates and the larger walk-throughs; his son, Aiden, works on the trucks.
When a Newberg date is urgent, the soonest we can send a crew is the following day, because the crew has a ridge to cross before the first piece is lifted. The earlier you call, the more choice you have on dates.

What a Newberg Move Gets From Us
Planned From Across the Ridge
Our yard sits in the Tualatin Valley, on the other side of the Chehalem Mountains, so each Newberg plan starts with the road over.
Township-Era Doorways
Older homes near S River Street get big pieces measured against the doorways during the walk-through.
Couplet Curb Plans
Homes on or near E Hancock and E 1st get the truck's approach and loading spot settled before move day.
Bypass-Aware Timing
Moves near the Highway 219 interchange are timed around the work zone by South Springbrook Road.
Springbrook Move-Ins
New homes in northeast Newberg get floor runners down and a move date that follows your keys.
Dundee Moves on the Bypass
A drive between Newberg and Dundee takes the bypass rather than crawling through both downtowns on 99W.
The Ridge, the Bypass and the Couplet
Road 1: The ridge on Highway 219
The Chehalem Mountains form the southern edge of the Tualatin Valley, and Highway 219 climbs over them on its way down into Newberg. It is the direct line from our side of the ridge, through wooded, rural country where a single fallen tree has shut the road: in December 2024, a closure eight miles north of town lasted part of an afternoon. When 219 is blocked, the way down is 99W through Sherwood. The drive is already inside your billed hours either way, so on move morning the only question is which road gets the crew to you on time.
Road 2: The bypass, open on one end
Phase 1 of the Newberg-Dundee Bypass opened on January 6, 2018: four miles of highway from Highway 219 to 99W south of Dundee. Its planned link to 99W northeast of town is not yet funded. That makes the bypass the road for moves between Newberg and Dundee or anywhere southwest, while moves toward Sherwood and the metro still pass through town on 99W.
Road 3: The couplet downtown
Downtown, 99W splits into E Hancock Street and E 1st Street, each running one way, with on-street parking in front of the shops. A 26-foot truck has to arrive at your block moving with traffic and find curb space long enough to drop its ramp. For homes and apartments on or just off the couplet, we choose the approach and a loading spot before the date, and a cross street is the first place we look.

What the Valley Itself Adds to a Newberg Move
Winter weather on the mountain road
Bald Peak, the high point of the Chehalem Mountains, reaches 1,629 feet, and the wooded upper stretches of 219 can see winter conditions the valley floor does not. On a December through February date, ask us the day before whether the crew is coming over 219 or around on 99W, so you know when to expect the truck.
Traffic that already moved to the bypass
In the months after the bypass opened, about 36 percent of northbound and 39 percent of southbound traffic left 99W for the new road. A truck bound for Sherwood or the metro gets none of that relief and still carries the full 99W load on the couplet.
Ramps and bridges under construction at Highway 219
ODOT started Phase 2A in 2025: new ramps and signals, a bridge carrying the eastbound exit ramp over 219, and a realigned Wynooski Road, with completion expected in 2027. The work zone has run at 35 mph, with delays near South Springbrook Road. Until the ramps open, we may offer a wider time window for addresses near that junction.
A one-way downtown that ODOT is studying
ODOT's downtown study for the couplet looks at narrowing E Hancock and E 1st to two traffic lanes each and removing a few parking spaces near intersections. Fewer spaces by the corners would push truck loading toward mid-block and cross streets, which is where we look first for downtown addresses anyway.
An 1880s township with its oldest house on River Street
Jesse Edwards, the Quaker founder of Newberg, built the Hoover-Minthorn House on S River Street in 1881, and a young Herbert Hoover lived there from 1885 to 1888. The blocks around it hold some of the city's older homes, where narrower stairs and original trim mean measuring big pieces against the doorways during the walk-through.
Hundreds of new homes planned in the northeast
The Springbrook Master Plan covers more than 450 acres in northeast Newberg, and a subdivision opening its first phase in 2026 plans more than 400 homes north of Mountainview Drive. Move-in dates in new construction follow the builder's schedule, and with no deposit on the line, a slipped closing costs you nothing with us.
A riverside that used to be a mill
The land along the Willamette on Newberg's south side held a lumber operation from the 1880s and later a paper mill that closed in 2015. The surrounding Riverfront planning area, from 9th Street down to the river, is mostly low-density and rural residential, where some of the city's larger lots sit.

Crew Methods for the Ridge and the Couplet
A full truck on the ridge road
A Newberg household headed north into the Tualatin Valley climbs 219 on a winding grade. The crew builds that load with dense pieces like dressers as the base, mattresses and sofas in padded rows, and straps added section by section, which helps keep furniture steady through the curves over the ridge.
Loading on a one-way street
On E Hancock or E 1st, loading starts by stopping as close to the door as parking allows. Pads go along the sidewalk edge, the ramp stays short, and shoppers keep walking past while pieces go straight into the truck.
Move-ins beside active construction in Springbrook
Streets north of Mountainview Drive are still filling in, so the truck may share the curb with a concrete mixer or a landscaping crew. Floor runners protect new flooring, and jamb guards cover fresh paint.
Long drives off Highway 219
Rural addresses on the mountain slopes often have gravel, narrow turnarounds, or steep approaches. We look at those at the walk-through and decide whether the truck goes to the house or the crew carries from a flatter spot.
Released Value, Replacement Cost and Claims
The extra miles leave the coverage rules where they were. Released value at $0.60 per pound is the legal floor, not a plan. Replacement-cost protection is available if you choose to purchase it. We will submit a claim upon request.

Questions From Newberg Callers
What will a move inside Newberg cost?
Two things set the total: the hours your inventory takes on the card above, and the travel time from our yard. A small unit downtown and a big Springbrook house are far apart, so we give you a crew size and an estimated hours for your actual inventory before you book.
Can you move us today?
Newberg is far enough from our yard that we do not offer same-day moves here. Call, and we check the next day first.
When do we need to call to get on the calendar?
One to two weeks of notice covers most local moves. Large homes and summer dates need more lead time than that.
Can you keep our things somewhere between homes?
No. We do not offer storage. If your Springbrook house is not ready, the moving date moves behind it rather than the move being split in two.
Can you move our downtown shop without closing during business hours?
Yes. Storefront and office moves can load out in the evening or on a weekend, so a business on the couplet can close up for the day and open at the new space.
Our riverside place sits on a deep lot with a detached shop full of tools. Is that extra?
A shop or outbuilding is one more room on the inventory, billed at the same hourly rate. Mention it on the call so the crew counts and truck space cover it. On South Newberg's larger lots, the walk-through also measures the carry from the street and determines whether the truck backs up into the driveway or the crew uses a dolly path.
Do we need a permit to park the truck downtown?
Ask the city about your specific block before the move. We will tell you how much curb space the truck needs so you can ask the right question.

The Order of a Butterfield Newberg Move
Street first, then a visit for the larger homes
Patrick asks which street you are on, whether the house sits on or near the couplet, and whether it is up a long drive. Then rooms, big pieces, and the date. Bigger households get a visit: truck position, carry distance and any furniture that has to be taken down all get settled in person. Crew size and hours then go on the estimate, with the drive from our yard inside them.
Pack days ahead, protection at the door
When packing is part of the job, a separate day ahead means the moving crew arrives to sealed, labeled boxes. On load day, the crew starts by laying floor runners and fitting guards on door jambs. Furniture is wrapped and padded, and hardware from anything we take apart is bagged, tagged, and photographed if you want it.
Strapped in, driven over, beds rebuilt first
Pieces go into the truck in a tight, strapped order, the crew heads to the new address, and beds go back together before anything else.
Settle up once every piece is placed
Before the crew signs off, go through the new place and point out anything that should shift to another room. Then pay by card, check, or cash.
Newberg Move Plans, Road First
These are plans laid out the way we would build them on an estimate call.
A downtown house to a new Springbrook-area home
Start with the loading side. If the house sits off E 1st Street, the truck parks on the cross street and stays out of the shop parking. The drive north to the new home is short, so the hours go to carrying. Before the date, we ask you to confirm with the builder that the driveway is finished and the street is open to a truck, because a subdivision that is still filling in can have equipment working nearby. Runners go over the new floors before anything comes through the door.
A Newberg home to a smaller place in Dundee
The truck loads in Newberg and takes the bypass toward Dundee instead of crawling through both downtowns on 99W. At the Dundee end, the crew rebuilds the bed and sets out the pieces you are keeping before anything else.
A Newberg household headed to the Oregon coast
Once a move leaves the valley on Highway 18 for the coast, the hourly card no longer makes sense. We visit or talk through the inventory, then send a written mileage-and-weight quote. Load day in Newberg follows the same protection routine as a local job.
